European Wilderness Network

The European Wilderness Network consists of audited 23 Wilderness in 14 countries all across Europe. Every year new areas are being audited and are joining this ever expanding network. All members are audited according to the  European Wilderness Quality Standard and Audit System and then classified according to the predominant habitat in the below listed five categories.

In total we have now audited more than 300.000 ha of excellent Wilderness according to the European Wilderness Quality Standard. Our objectives is 500.000 ha of audited Wilderness by 2020 and 1.000.000 ha audited Wilderness by 2030 meeting the European Wilderness Quality Standard.

Hohe Tauern Wilderness Wilderness Gold category A wilderness of glaciated land of 8,465 ha embedded into the National Park Hohe Tauern, Austria. Wilderness was audited in 2015 according to the European Wilderness Quality Standard by the European Wilderness Society.
Kalkalpen Wilderness Wilderness Platinum Category Kalkalpen Wilderness of 13,034 ha is embedded in the Nationalpark Kalkalpen, Austria. Wilderness was audited in 2015 according to the European Wilderness Quality Standard by the European Wilderness Society.
Gorgany Wilderness Wilderness The 5,344 ha large Gorgany Wilderness is part of the Gorgany Strict Reserve, Ukraine. The area was Quick-Audited in 2016 according to the European Wilderness Quality Standard by the European Wilderness Society. A Wilderness Full-Audit is scheduled for 2017.
Synevyr Wilderness Wilderness The 3,000 ha large Synevyr Wilderness is embedded in the Synevyr National Park, Ukraine. The area was Quick-Audited in 2016 according to the European Wilderness Quality Standard by the European Wilderness Society. A Wilderness Full-Audit is scheduled for 2017.
Königsbrücker Heide Wilderness Wilderness The 7,000 ha of Königsbrücker Heide Wilderness is located in a Königsbrücker Heide Nature Reserve, Germany covering a former military training ground. The area was Quick-Audited in 2014 according to the European Wilderness Quality Standard by the European Wilderness Society.
Central Balkan Wilderness Wilderness The 21,019 ha of Central Balkan Wilderness is embedded in the Central Balkan National Park, Bulgaria. It was audited in 2003 under EWQA 1.0 by PAN Parks. A European Wilderness Quality Standard Renewal-Audit is scheduled for 2017.
Borjomi-Kharagauli Wilderness Wilderness This 50,325 ha Borjomi-Kharagauli Wilderness in Georgia is embedded in the Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park. It was audited in 2006 under EWQA 1.0 by PAN Parks.
Kure Mountains Wilderness Wilderness The 26,283 ha of Kure Mountain Wilderness is embedded in the Kure Mountains National Park in Turkey and was audited in 2012 under EWQA 1.0 by PAN Parks.
Oulanka Wilderness Wilderness The 12,924 ha large Oulanka Wilderness is embedded in the Oulanka National Park in Finland. It was one of the first Wilderness to be audited in 2002 under EWQA 1.0 by PAN Parks.
Soomaa Wilderness Wilderness The 11.000 ha large Sooma Wilderness is part of the Sooma National Park in Estonia. It was audited in 2009 under EWQA by PAN Parks.
Rila Wilderness Wilderness The Rila Wilderness encompasses 16,350 ha of excellent Wilderness embedded in Rila National Park, Bulgaria and was audited in 2005 under EWQA 1.0 by PAN Parks.
Retezat Wilderness Wilderness The 14,215 ha Retezat Wilderness is embedded in Retezat National Park in Romania and was audited in 2004. The park is scrutiny to several complaints of legal and illegal logging activities.
Majella Wilderness Wilderness The Majella Wilderness with a size of 25,500 ha is embedded in Majella National Park, Italy. The area was audited in 2005 under EWQA 1.0 by PAN Parks and was the inspiration for the European Wilderness Preservation System.
Peneda Wilderness Wilderness The Peneda Wilderness 5, 000 ha is embedded into the Peneda National Park, Portugal and was audited in 2008 under EWQA 1.0 by PAN Parks.
Fulufjället Wilderness Wilderness The 22,140 ha large Fulufjället Wilderness in Sweden is embedded in the Fulufjället National Park and was audited in 2002 under EWQA 1.0 by PAN Parks.
Paanajarvi Wilderness Wilderness This 30,000 ha of Paanajarvi Wilderness is embedded in the Paanajarvi National Park in Russia and was audited in 2005 under EWQA 1.0 by PAN Parks.
Cepkeliai-Dzukia Wilderness Wilderness This 13,004 ha of Dzukia Wilderness is embedded in the 69,745 ha large Cepkeliai-Dzukia National Park in Lithuania and was audited in 2011 under EWQA 1.0 by PAN Parks.
Hoverla Wilderness Wilderness The 4,400 ha large Hoverla Wilderness is part of the Carpathian National Nature Park, Ukraine. The area was Quick-Audited in 2016 according to the European Wilderness Quality Standard by the European Wilderness Society. A Wilderness Full-Audit is scheduled for 2017.

Archipelago Wilderness WILDCoast The Archipelago Wilderness of 10,600 ha is a marine/land wilderness at the tip of Finland. It is also embedded into the Archipelago National Park. It was audited in 2007 under EWQA by PAN Parks.

Zacharovanyy Kray Wilderness WILDForest Bronze Category Zacharovanyy Kray Wilderness of 1,332 ha is embedded in the Zacharovanyy Kray National Park, Ukraine. Wilderness was audited in 2015 according to the European Wilderness Quality Standard by the European Wilderness Society.
Uholka Wilderness WILDForest The Uholka Wilderness of 8,958 ha in the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve, Ukraine is one of the largest unfragmented and untouched beech forest Wilderness in Europe. The area was Quick-Audited in 2016 according to the European Wilderness Quality Standard by the European Wilderness Society. A Wilderness Full-Audit is scheduled for 2017.
