Green Belt Center Opens along the former Iron Curtain
On Sunday May 3rd 2015, 10:00 the new Green Belt Center in Windhaag near Freistadt , Austria will open its doors & diverse activities to everyone interested in the precious features along the Green Belt embedded in the lovely landscape of the Mühlviertel.

The Green Belt Europe is about 12.500 km long and reaches from Scandinavia to South East Europa and is an integral part of the Pan-European Green Corridor Network of the European Wilderness Society. It is nowadays a ‚ribbon of life’ along the route of the former Iron Curtain, which divided Europe over several decades, leaving deep traces in people psyche, but also presented an impenetrable wall of barb wire and soldiers ready to shoot on everything even for wildlife.
Today Europeans are blessed to witness the emerging values of the Iron Curtain-turned-into-the Green Belt with its very special history.
Due to the inhospitality people on both side of the Iron Curtain avoided their presence.
After the fall of the Iron Curtain this absence of human activities let nature evolve into a diversity of life, habitats and species, incomparable to anywhere else in Europe.
The best thing however: it is a natural continuum all along the North-South axis of Europe, of its different climates, its diverse geological and topographical, its cultural and historical variety: It is CONNECTED and CONNECTING!
Not just for Wildlife, but also for people:
The Green Belt Centre offers trans boundary nature tourism, serves as an international meeting, learning and information place and will play an important part in the regional tourism.
The Green Belt Centre is ran by the ‘Naturraum Grünes Band GmbH, the regional architects and construction companies were responsible for the modern wood building which cost of 1,6 MIO Euro were taken over by 40% by the EU.
