25th Edition of the Danilo Re Memorial
Dedicated to the Italian park ranger Danilo Re, the Danilo Re Memorial is a sports competition for rangers from National Parks in the Alps. As a prize the teams can win the Danilo Re trophy.
On the 16th to the 19th January 2020, the 25th Danilo Re Memorial will take place in Mittersill in the National Park Hohe Tauern, Austria. It is open for protected areas strechting all over the Alps from France to Slovenia. Danilo Re was a well-known mountaineer who spent most of his working and private time experiencing mountainous nature and Wilderness in the Alps.

Development of the Danilo Re trophy
As a passionate national park warden, Danilo Re was particularly enthusiastic about botany and birds. He worked on the discovery of various important species, awareness raising campaigns and on environmental education. He died in 1995 due to an accident in his job. For his extraordinary commitment and involvement in the park, the authorities named the botanical centre after him.
At the very beginning, the park wanted to keep Danilo Re in memory and organised a sports competition in 1996. It was a huge success since the very beginning. First, just wardens of the park participated but they extended the competition and it finally resolved into this annual event. The memorial is dedicated to alpine protected area workers, including outdoor sport competitions as well as workshops for the rangers. In addition, the participants have a great opportunity to have an exchange with their colleagues.
Wilderness in the Alps
The Alps are the largest mountain massif in Central Europe. They became a subject of centuries of human society development. Only in the last several decades did the network of protected areas develop. Many of these areas include last fragments of Wilderness either forgotten in the remote corners of the Alps. Or they are purposely created by removing human extractive activities such as grazing, mining or forestry.
