Developing projects for Interreg, Erasmus and more

Over the last months, the European Wilderness Society worked closely together with international partners to prepare several multi-year projects. The Interreg Central Europe call for proposals ended last week and the consortiums submitted two proposals. Today, one of our colleagues is flying to the US for further international cooperations. These efforts support us to protect Europe’s last Wilderness for the future generations.

Interreg projects on European natural heritage and protected areas

The ‘Beech Power’ project has been developed in close cooperation with the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development  and Kalkalpen Nationalpark and included partners from Germany, Slovakia, Slovenia and Croatia. The project focuses on beech forests of the UNESCO World Heritage site: ‘Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and other Regions of Europe’. Targeting regional development, buffer zone managment and a universal Quality Standard, this project aims to support all component parts of the largest World Heritage site.

Several European Wilderness Network partners are also member of this unique UNESCO World Natural Heritage designation, including Kalkalpen Wilderness, Central Balkan Wilderness, Gorgany Wilderness, Synevyr Wilderness, Zacharovanyy kray WILDForest, Uholka-Shyrokyy Luh Wilderness, Kuziy-Tribushany WILDForest, Jasmund WILDCoast and Hainich WILDForest.

Also, we supported the proposal development process of the ‘Centralparks’ project, led by our Italian colleagues from EURAC. This project aims for improvement of management capacities of protected areas. It involves local sustainable development, environmental management capacities and policies, transnational cooperation and more. In line with the strategy from the Carpathian Convention, this international consortium will aim to reconcile nature conservation with local development through involvement of communities and stakeholders. Participating in this call were partners from Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, Romania and the Czech Republic.

By the end of 2018, these proposals will be reviewed and possibly granted. However, we will work on several more proposals. There are upcoming calls within the INTERREG Europe and INTERREG Danube Transnational Programme, for which we will actively develop or assist in development of new proposals. In the meantime, we are developing, among others, four new projects for the Erasmus+ Youth in Action programme. Additionally, we develop three projects for the Austrian Ministry that supported our Let’s get Wild! project, and support multiple international project proposals running in Luxembourg.

Open call for cooperation

The European Wilderness Society would gladly cooperate, support, join or consult in new upcoming projects. This also includes other programmes besides Interreg and Erasmus. With our multi-disciplinary team, we can apply our expertise various topics. This includes Wilderness stewardship, PA management, sustainable tourism, marketing, communication and more.
