  1. Forest losses in Sweden and Finland are caused by intense clear-cut forestry that has lead to huge losses of old natural Forests. A rough estimate is that there is maybe 10 % left of somewhat natural Forests left in Sweden, mostly as small fragments (a few hectares) of habitat dispersed in a heavily logged landscape. Trees will grow back after cutting but the once natural forests are gradually transformed into plantations with massive loss of biodiversity. Around 90 % of all cut areas are scarred (scarification to improve sapling growth in the early years) with heavy Machines and then planted with saplings from nurseries. hardly any natural regeneration is used in forestry anymore. In that sense the forest is lost permanently due to conversion into plantation forestry.
