European Wilderness Society

Our Wild Team is growing!

In the last few months, the European Wilderness Society team has rapidly expanded with four new volunteers! Here are their short portraits.

Biff Houlston

The first one to join us was Biff. He moved to Tamsweg, from Southern England during some of the heaviest snow the Lungau had received in years. While initially learning to ski, he started at the beginning of February as the first European Solidarity Corps volunteer. Biff got stuck into learning about website maintenance and Ad words. From this he participates in assisting the team in daily tasks. When not at work Biff is either relaxing at home playing video games or trying to find some of the Reptiles and Amphibians Austria has to offer while enjoying the beauty of the Biosphere Reserve Lungau.

Ziva Alif

The next one to join was Ziva, another European Solidarity Corps volunteer. She moved to Tamsweg in mid-June, straight after leaving England where she completed her bachelor’s degree in Biology. Meanwhile she is the volunteer closest to home as she comes from Ljubljana, Slovenia, only two hours away from Tamsweg. She works on a variety of different tasks, including writing of the marketing and communication material and helping with the management of European Wilderness Network. As she loves hiking and spending time outdoors, she’s excited about the opportunity to spend one year in UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Lungau, surrounded with mountains.

Jonas Sommer

Just a week after Ziva, Jonas arrived to Tamsweg as a Youth Volunteer for the Centralparks Interreg project. He is from Germany, but arrived here from the Netherlands, where he did his master in Nature Conservation. He is excited to bring conservation closer to people after spending a lot of time in different research projects about ecology. As he enjoys cycling and hiking in the summer and skiing in the winter he is happy to live in Tamsweg. Together with Hanna he is working on the Centralparks and helps with tasks where speaking German is required.

Helena Hieke

Also joining the team as a volunteer with the Interreg Volunteer Youth programme is Helena. She is still studying in her bachelor’s degree back in Eberswalde, Germany. At the same time she is doing her practical Internship for her studies in the European Wilderness Society and loves living surrounded with mountains again for the next half year. Mainly working on the BEECH POWER project she works within the project and the different partners to help set up a “Beech Forest Quality Standard”.
