Romania promotes Wilderness among Protected Areas

The European Wilderness Society met with the Romanian National Agency of Natural Protected Areas in Bucharest last December. The National Agency aims to improve the institutional capacity for Protected Areas across Romania. In Protected Areas without management, the Agency even provides management coordination. Additionally, it supports the development of professional skills among Protected Area staff. During the meeting, the European Wilderness Society explained in detail the European concept of Wilderness, and the national and international benefits for nature and people.

We are looking forward to develop a cooperation with the European Wilderness Society. Together, we can inform Romania’s Protected Areas on the concept of Wilderness, and the importance to protect it.

said Carmelia Dragomir Balanica, Vice President National Agency of Protected Areas in Romania.

Promoting Romanian Wilderness

The Romanian National Agency and European Wilderness Society have reached out to Protected Area managers across the country to inform them about the concept of Wilderness. A Wilderness workshop with the National Agency, European Wilderness Society and interested managers will follow. However, not in the office but out in the field of course.

Retezat Wilderness is currently Romania’s only certified Wilderness within the European Wilderness Network. Retezat Wilderness received the Platinum label, indicating the highest Wilderness Quality achievable. But the country has much more potential for certified Wilderness. Romania designated more than 23% of the land as protected area under different directives and regulations, of which primeval forests are a significant part. Yet, logging activities, modifications of wild rivers and wildlife hunting and poaching threaten some of the last natural wonders in Romania. Our special deforestation report describes how sanitary logging is often used as excuse for commercial logging activities across the country. Together with the Romanian National Agency, we aims to increase the awareness on true Wilderness in Romania and its importance.
