Threatened leopard killed in southeastern Turkey

High quality of Wilderness is usually indicated by the presence of rare carnivores, in Europe this usual implies bear, wolf or lynx. In Turkey the leopard is definitely an extremely important indicator of the high quality Wilderness. Therefore any kill of such a rare and protected kind of animal is consider a great lost and failure of Wilderness conservation.

In southeastern Turkey in the province of Diyarbakır the animal was shot by a shepherd last November. It was first thought to be an Anatolian Leopard, a species long believed to be extinct despite rumors that new specimens were seen in the mountains in southeastern Turkey. But a post-mortem inspection on the feline showed that it belonged to the Persian family of leopards…

Nevertheless, Europe lost again an important indicator of Wilderness…
