Wilderness and WILDIslands, WILDForests, WILDCoasts and WILDRivers
The recent announcement that the enlargement of the European Wilderness Network will include not only Wilderness but also WILDIslands, WILDForests, WILDCoasts and WILDRivers is filing a important gap in the Wilderness conservation in Europe.
The Wilderness Quality Standard and Audit System did not completely fit to the diversity and variability of habitats and ecosystems (forest, coast, islands) in Europe. Many times the current Wilderness criteria (size or Wilderness stewardship) did not fully respect their peculiarity…

Europe´s Beech forest is one example of this challenge. The work done in the previous years on this issuesby a group of enthusiastic people opened also new challenges for the European Wilderness Society.
