Objectives 2015-2020

The European Wilderness Society Board and Team met in Tamsweg 23-27 February to develop the European Wilderness Society Strategy and Objectives for the period ending 2020. The meeting was a great success, with several new project ideas developed. The objectives and updated mission statement re-affirms the commitment of the whole team to identify, designate, manage and promote Europe´s last wilderness. Our objectives for the period ending 2020 are:

  1. Establish the European Wilderness Quality Standard and Audit System (EWQA) as Europe´s premiere wilderness standard.
  2. Audit and certify 20 wilderness areas according to the EWQA
  3. Start the implementation of the Pan-European Green corridor network PEGNeT
  4. Hold annually Europe´s premiere Large Carnivore Conference
  5. Hold annually the European Wilderness Academy Days
  6. Develop a watershed and wild river wilderness criteria system to be implemented across Europe in close cooperation with Europe´s leading NGOs
  7. Lobby for improved human coexistence with the large carnivores and lobby for their return
  8. Educate school children on the value of wilderness for Europe
  9. Bring together wilderness and the fine arts to promote wilderness
  10. Identify wilderness areas which can be protected by leasing or buying strategic lots of property
