Global climate strike 2020 this Friday, 25th of September

Flashback: Greta Thunberg first striked for the climate in August 2018. The movement “Fridays for Future” gained momentum throughout 2019. Over the course of that year, they altered the global perception about climate change completely. Young protesters all around the world managed to transform the discussion about a slow climate change into a discussion about an urgent climate emergency. The year 2020 was supposed to be a critical year for countries, governments, and individuals to take action and the secure the future of our youth.

COVID-19 impacts climate strikes

The COVID-19 pandemic hit this movement like so many others hard. Not only were people not able to go on the streets to strike. The international media stirred the focus away from the climate crisis towards rising infection numbers and an economic crises.

Nevertheless, the pandemic showed us that, when an emergency is threatening our lives, we can take global actions – fast. The climate crisis also is an emergency, one that is by no means treated as such. That is why first hundreds, then millions of people striked for over two years. The urgent need to transform the global economy, combined with recent commitments to a more environmental friendly future of many companies and countries have great potential. Great potential to create not only a new, but also a climate-friendlier normal.

That’s exactly what protesters participating in the global climate strike demand. More than 2900 protests all over the globe, 10 of them in Austria, will take place this Friday, 25^th September 2020. It will be a different kind of protest – social distancing will be in place and country specific COVID-19 restrictions will be adhered to. Yet, maybe this will make it even more impactful.
