World Nature Conservation Day

Today, on July 28th, we join hands to observe World Nature Conservation Day—a global event dedicated to the preservation of our environment and natural resources. This special day shines a spotlight on the importance of safeguarding our planet and its diverse ecosystems for the well-being of present and future generations.

How Human Activities Increase the Threat of Pandemics

In recent times, it has become evident that human activities play a significant role in exacerbating the risk of pandemics like the coronavirus outbreak we are currently facing. Rapid industrialization, deforestation, and encroachment into natural habitats have disrupted the delicate balance of ecosystems. These activities have created opportunities for species to come into contact with one another, leading to the transmission of infectious diseases.

Biodiversity loss also plays a crucial role. As we witness a decline in the variety of species, disease vectors—the animals that carry and transmit pathogens—shift their feeding habits towards remaining vertebrate populations. This shift increases the chances of pathogens finding new hosts and reservoirs, further escalating the risk of pandemics.

The Importance of Taking Care of Nature

Nature provides us with essential resources such as clean air, fresh water, and fertile soil. It supports biodiversity, which ensures the stability and resilience of ecosystems. Conserving nature also mitigates climate change, protects endangered species, and promotes sustainable development.

Furthermore, maintaining the integrity of natural habitats helps prevent the emergence and spread of infectious diseases. By respecting and protecting the environment, we not only safeguard our own health but also contribute to the overall well-being of the planet.

How to Observe World Nature Conservation Day

On this significant day, we can each make a difference through our actions. Here are a few ways to observe World Nature Conservation Day:

  1. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Try to minimize your waste and recycle as much as possible. Instead of buying new things, see if you can reuse items or buy secondhand. Conserve water and use energy wisely.
  2. Organize or Participate in a Cleanup: This could be a beach, park, or even your local neighbourhood. Not only does it help clean the environment, but it also raises awareness about pollution.
  3. Use Public Transportation, Bike, or Walk: Cars contribute significantly to air pollution. Try to use public transportation, bike, or walk instead.
  4. Educate Yourself and Others: Use this day to learn more about the environment, nature, conservation, and sustainability. You could watch documentaries, read books or articles, or listen to podcasts on these topics. Share your knowledge with others, too. And follow Respect Nature concept.
  5. Support Conservation Organizations: Many non-profits are working tirelessly to conserve nature. You can support them by volunteering, donating, or even just sharing their work on social media.

Respect Nature

Through 9 easy-to-follow action guidelines, the Respect Nature explains how to behave in nature in order to have as little impact as possible. European Wilderness Society jointly with its numerous partners in different European countries implements this Concept widely and invites you to join!

Beside various workshops and trainings we have developed flyers, brochures, manual and posters, which you can also use!

Respect nature-Respect yourself!

For more than two decades European Wilderness Society aims not only to preserve natural treasures, embedded into European Wilderness Network, but also to underscore the need for humankind to coexist with nature harmoniously, respecting its laws and rhythms. Our work is a testament to the belief that the preservation of nature is not a luxury but a necessity for the survival and wellbeing of all species, including ours.

Chairman of the European Wilderness Society

Remember, even small steps can have a significant impact when taken collectively. Let us come together on this World Nature Conservation Day to protect and cherish the wonders of our natural world for generations to come!
