Wilderness in Northern Germany

All federal states in Germany, including Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are currently identifying potential Wilderness. It is a task imbedded in the Wilderness Strategy for Germany which is an integral part of the German National Strategy on Biological Diversity. This strategy envisages that Wilderness should cover 2 % of the German land area by 2020 and forests with natural forest development should account for 5 % of the wooded area.

Jasmund and Vilm

Olaf Ostermann, Head of unit Large Protected Areas in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Prof. Dr. Hannes Knapp and two representatives of the European Wilderness Society Otto Dibelius, Legal Counsel and Vlado Vancura, Deputy Chairman, Director Wilderness Programme met on 29 March 2017 in Schwerin at the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment to discuss the results of several days of elaborate field research concerning compliance of selected areas with the European Wilderness Quality Standard.

Intention and proposal of the European Wilderness Society focused on the Jasmund National Park and the Isle of Vilm.

Part of the Jasmund National Park, particularly WILDCoast and WILDForest (already part of the World Heritage Site: Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and the Ancient Beech Forests of Germany) and the Isle of Vilm are complying with the European Wilderness Quality Standard. We will include them to the European Wilderness Network! This meeting to find a way of mutual understanding and coordination…

  • HI,
Actually if you look here, you will not only find the latest ones but also all our Partners of the European Wilderness Network. The idea is great and we will check if we use a jpeg in the future or such an interactive map.

    Wild regards
