World Ranger Day 2026

Today, on World Ranger Day, we celebrate the dedication, courage, and professionalism of rangers across the globe. As we mark 20 years of World Ranger Day, we honour those who have lost their lives or been injured in the line of duty, while recognising the vital work of rangers who stand on the frontlines of nature conservation every day.

Rangers: Guardians of a Changing Planet

This year’s theme, “Rangers: Guardians of a Changing Planet,” highlights the increasingly complex challenges rangers face as they protect biodiversity, respond to climate change, support local communities, and safeguard our shared natural and cultural heritage.

European Wilderness Society is a proud member of the International Ranger Federation and is continuously working with Protected Areas and their dedicated employees.

Supporting Ukrainian Rangers

Beyond its work across Europe, the European Wilderness Society has been standing alongside Ukrainian protected area professionals by strengthening the capacity of park rangers through dedicated training programmes, knowledge exchange, and international cooperation. In partnership with Ukrainian institutions, the Society has delivered ranger training on nature interpretation, biodiversity communication, sustainable tourism, waste management, and public engagement—helping rangers enhance their skills despite the extraordinary challenges they face. By investing in professional development and fostering long-term collaboration, the European Wilderness Society demonstrates that supporting rangers also means supporting the resilience of nature conservation in Ukraine.

Collaboration with Austrian Rangers

At the National Park Neusiedler See–Seewinkel, rangers demonstrate how modern conservation extends beyond protecting landscapes. Working together with the European Wilderness Society (EWS), particularly within the ALFAwetlands Horizon Europe research project, they actively promote citizen engagement and encourage biodiversity observations, empowering visitors and local communities to contribute valuable data that strengthens conservation and fosters a deeper connection with nature.

Rangers and Youth

Additionally, European Wilderness Society is working continuously with youth, promoting the value of European Protected Areas and Wilderness, introducing nature conservation jobs, particularly Rangers. Our Respect Nature activities and trainings on communication with park visitors is an essential part of the programme of our regular transnational Youth Green Conferences.
