European Wilderness Society invited by UNEP

NEP Vienna office and the European Wilderness Society seek for cooperation opportunities in order to improve the protection of Wilderness in the Carpathian mountains.

Zoltan Kun visited the UNEP Vienna office and met its head Harald Egerer and Matthias Jurek technical expert on 12 September. The UNEP office acts as the Interim Secretariat of the Carpathian Convention (ISCC) and was established in 2004. ISCC supports the implementation of the Carpathian convention, promotes ratification and facilitates cooperation between the signatory states as well as other relevant international bodies and conventions, encourages and supports research, communication and information exchange between partners, coordinates the preparation and implementation of the work programme under the Convention, prepares relevant documentation and supports further institutional development. The meeting was really fruitful and three areas of possible cooperation were defined:

  • improving the management practice of protected areas through offering training opportunities
  • developing sustainable tourism practices in the Carpathians
  • developing a large scale mountain corridor project within the framework of PEGnet

Both parties are going to look into funding opportunities in order to develop joint projects on these fields.

The two parties agreed that our Society should participate in the upcoming COP of the Carpathian Convention in Mikulov, Czech Republic, as an observer. Our organisation will also be invited in the future as participant at relevant working group meetings such as the tourism and forest WGs.
