Happy New Year: the challenges of 2020
A tremendous year is coming to an end. 55 years ago, the United States passed the Wilderness Act, 10 years ago the European Parliament passed the European Wilderness Resolution and 5 years ago the European Wilderness Society was founded with the mission to protect Europe´s last Wilderness.
Our supporters allowed us in 2019 among many things to educate almost 800 children on Wilderness and Wildlife, certify Wilderness in Italy, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Austria and Slovakia, start the Vlado Vancura Wilderness Center, hold the European Wilderness Academy Days and improve the management capacity of protected areas in the Carpathians.
In 2014 a little more than 83.000 Wilderness Advocates visited our website increasing in 2019 to incredible 261.000 visitors.
Wilderness fascinates and challenges us all the time. It is the last place on our planet where we are just visitors and not explorers or conquerors. Wilderness shows us how nature adapts to changes in the environment and therefore is vital for our own survival.
The last decade also saw Wilderness being threatened by the logging industry supported by questionable politicians like never before. In the United States the Tongass is being opened to exploitation, in Romania the deforestation, illegal logging and the destruction of WILDRivers is continuing and in the Amazon 8.4 million soccer fields of forests were deforested in the last decade. Add to that the human caused climate crisis and we are heading towards a total disaster.
We can change this by standing together and fighting for Europe’s and the World’s last Wilderness.
Help us in this endeavor to protect Europe´s last Wilderness. If you have some change left over after the holidays, please donate to support our important work.
PS: you can even donate in your home currency 🙂
