These efforts reflect a growing trend of young people actively shaping the future of the planet, from grassroots activism to high-level policy influence.
Youth education
The European Wilderness Society offers a variety of youth educational activities to foster environmental awareness and engagement. Notably, the “Let’s Get Wild” school project has reached hundreds of students across Austria, educating them about wilderness, forests, climate change, and the resurgence of large carnivores.

The Youth Green Conference-2025: Fostering international collaboration for sustainability
One of the most exciting events on the horizon for Austria’s environmentally conscious youth is the Youth Green Conference 2025. This multinational event will take place already for the third time! Set to take place in the breathtaking Biosphere Reserve Lungau, the conference will bring together young people from Austria, Ukraine, Spain, and Slovenia for five days of learning, collaboration, and action. Funded by ERASMUS+ and led by the European Wilderness Society, the conference seeks to provide a platform for youth to address urgent environmental challenges.
The event will not only focus on vital issues like climate change and sustainability but will also offer workshops and hands-on activities that help participants deepen their understanding of rural life, environmental conservation, and the importance of protecting natural habitats. By leveraging creativity, participants will create podcasts and other media content to raise awareness and further their message. The conference is more than just an educational event; it’s a cross-cultural exchange that promotes collaboration across borders and generations, providing a space for the youth of Europe to shape the green future they envision.
Young volunteers involvement
European Wilderness Society also actively engages young volunteers in nature conservation through programs like the European Solidarity Corps and Interreg Volunteer Youth. These initiatives offer opportunities for volunteers to develop skills in project management, environmental education, and intercultural communication. Volunteers contribute to various activities, including writing publications, assisting in project implementation, organizing events, and participating in field trips. This hands-on experience fosters personal and professional growth while promoting a deeper connection to wilderness preservation.
